Zotanixin (nitazoxanide) treats diarrhea. It is an antimicrobial drug able to kill parasitic worms and protozoa.

Indications

Zotanixin is indicated in the treatment of giardiasis caused by Giardia lamblia and acute intestinal amebiasis or amoebic dysentery caused by E. histolytica. Helminthiasis: this drug is a polyvalent anthelmintic, effective against nematodes, cestodes and trematodes. It is indicated in the treatment of parasitosis by Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Strongyloides stercolaris, Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, Trichuris trichiura, Taenia saginata, Taenia solium, Hymenolepis nana, Fasciola hepatica and Isospora bellidiopidium, Cryptosa belliumus, Cryptosis. It is effective in the treatment of both symptomatic and asymptomatic trichomoniasis in men and women with endocervicitis, cervicitis and cervical erosions. The asymptomatic sexual partner must be treated simultaneously since vaginal trichomoniasis is considered a sexually transmitted disease.

Dosage and administration

The drug is taken orally.

Helminthiasis: 7.5 mg per kg every 12 hours for 3 days. Amebiasis/cysts and trophozoites: 7.5 mg per kg every 12 hours for 3 days. Giardiasis: 7.5 mg per kg every 12 hours for 3 days. Fascioliasis: 7.5 mg per kg every 12 hours for 7 days. Trichomoniasis: 7.5 mg per kg every 12 hours for 3 days.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance;
  • Children under 2 years;
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Side effects

The most commonly reported adverse reactions are nausea (in 8% of patients), sometimes accompanied by headache, anorexia and vomiting, epigastric discomfort and / or abdominal pain. This medicine causes a change in the urine color.

Overdose

It is very unlikely that an overdose of Zotanixin will occur. If it still happens, the manifestations are related to the digestive system. In case of overdose, induce vomiting and administer aluminum hydroxide with magnesium.

Interaction

Concomitant use with coumarins and warfarin can increase plasma levels and extend prothrombin time.
