Posipen is an antibiotic that is active against most of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. It is indicated in tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, pneumonia of multiple foci, empyemas, pneumothorax with or without pneumatoceles and pulmonary abscesses produced by Staphylococcus aureus, including penicillinase producers. It is also indicated in a wide variety of skin and soft tissue infections such as impetigo, impetigo blistering, furunculosis, pyodermas, cellulitis, hidradenitis, scalded skin syndrome (Lyell’s syndrome and Ritter’s disease) and wounds infected with Staphylococcus. The drug is also used to treat septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, and pyomyositis.

Indications

Posipen is indicated in tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, multiple-focus pneumonia, even in severe complications such as empyema, pneumothorax with or without pneumatoceles and lung abscesses produced by Staphylococcus aureus, including penicillinase producers. It is also indicated in a wide variety of skin and soft tissue infections such as impetigo, bullous impetigo, furunculosis, pyoderma, cellulite, hydrosadenitis, scalded skin syndrome (Lyell’s syndrome and Ritter’s disease) and wounds infected by Staphylococcus. Also, it is used in septic arthritis, osteomyelitis and pyomyositis.

Dosage and administration

  • Children 7 to 12 years: 1-2 capsules of 250 mg every 6 hours orally;
  • Adults and over 12 years: 1-2 capsules of 500 mg every 6 hours orally.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to penicillin.

Side effects

Allergic reactions of varying severity may occur.

Overdose

In case of an anaphylactic reaction, the application of adrenaline is recommended intramuscularly. Other medications such as steroids, antihistamines and others may also be used.

Interaction

The bactericidal action of Posipen is antagonized with the co-administration of tetracyclines or any other bacteriostatic, so simultaneous administration should be avoided.
