Indications

Neosporin Oftálmico is indicated in ocular bacterial infections and its annexes as conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal ulcerations, ulcerative blepharitis with associated conjunctivitis and chronic dacryocystitis. It can be applied preoperatively and postoperatively to avoid eye infection after surgical interventions, including the removal of foreign bodies from the eye.

This solution is well tolerated in the eye and is suitable for use at all ages, including children and the elderly.

Dosage and administration

Route of administration: ophthalmic. The recommended dose is 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye, two to four times a day, but more frequent administration may be necessary depending on the severity of the case. If a drop does not cover the eye properly, it can be replaced by another drop. Treatment should be continued at least two days after the condition has resolved but should not be extended for more than 7 days without medical supervision. It can be used at the same dose from 2 years of age and older, as well as in adults. No special precautions are needed for use in elderly patients. The dosage should be lower in patients with reduced renal function.

Contraindications

Neosporin Oftálmico is contraindicated in patients with allergic hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula or who have cross-sensitization to framycetin, kanamycin, gentamicin or other related antibiotics. The drug is also contraindicated in situations where there may be access to intraocular fluids. It should not be used for a long time or in very large areas, due to the potential ototoxic and nephrotoxic effects of neomycin sulfate. There is the possibility of an increase in absorption in very young children. It may be due to the immaturity of both the skin and renal function. For this reason, the solution is not recommended in newborns and children under 2 years. Do not use this product with contact lenses.

Side effects

The prolonged use of Neosporin Oftálmico can cause excessive growth of non-susceptible microorganisms including fungi. It should not be applied during surgery or before surgery in circumstances in which the product can pass into intraocular fluids. The incidence of allergic hypersensitivity to neomycin sulfate in the general population is low, but sensitization may occur after ocular application. Allergic hypersensitivity reactions after topical application of polymyxin B sulfate and gramicidin are rare but have been reported. The drug is unlikely to be absorbed at the systemic level, so the possibility of toxicity is very remote.

Overdose

No cases reported.

Interaction

Neosporin Oftálmico can intensify and prolong the respiratory effects of neuromuscular blockers.
